Originally an Irish folksong. I read somewhere it became fairly popular among some parts of the British women´s lib movement in the 1960s when Bert Jansch first recorded it. The lyrics point at the underprivileged position of women in those times. (By the way - Bert´s arrangement was copied by “Led Zeppelin” on one of their albums with no credits for Bert.)
Originally written by Lonnie Johnson this song must have inspired John Martyn to play his fascinatingly passionate version (“The Easy Blues”)
This song is a real John Martyn classic from his acoustic guitar period. Great lyrics and a voice full of emotion.
